I am a Reading Specialist at a small charter school. I work closely with the classroom teachers to help our students work on the right reading strategies. One of the teachers and I are working with a student now and teaching them Check for Understanding. They understand the idea, but we want to them to truly understand the WHY behind the strategy. Any suggestions on how to help with this part of teaching the strategy?
How do you help children understand the WHY behind Check for Understanding?

I think it might help to show your student(s) this rubric for the Assessment of Learning for Check for Understanding.
This spells out what we want kiddos to be able to do as they read–to always be aware of the ‘who’ and ‘what’
You and the classroom teachers might want to watch the video at the link below to see how the teacher is talking with the student about this strategy.

I think showing kids the videos from this site are helpful in lots of ways, as well.
