Good fit books for non readers

#1

I tam wondering about how emergent readers and kids who are not yet reading should choose books. Since they should choose books in which they know almost all of the words, this leaves very little choice for most of my class. My beginning grade one class is comprised mostly of students who can barely decode a few simple words.

One of the first lessons is “The 3 Ways to Read a Book”–Read the words, read the pictures and retell the story. Reading the pictures is a great skill for early/beginning readers to develop. Having a selection of books with pictures that tell the story or share facts would be great selections for them. Developing this skill helps them develop the strategy of “create a mental image” later.
